SW Washington Fishing

SW Washington- Fishing for salmon and steelhead on most district streams remains slow but the Cowlitz will offer up some spring chinook and summer steelhead as we enter the peak period of returns.

The Wind River and Drano Lake fisheries are slow to jump-start but counts at Bonneville are starting to climb and the action should take off this week. With no effort taking place below Bonneville, salmon should be motivated to bite offerings.

Liberal opportunity is slated for razor clam diggers on the Washington Coast starting today. Check the WDF&W web site for detailed information.

SW Washington fishing report

SW Washington- The Cowlitz remains a top prospect for salmon and steelhead and spring chinook catches are beginning to peak despite a low return predicted. Summer steelhead should begin entering in better numbers too.

The Wind River and Drano Lake fisheries are underway but passage at Bonneville remains modest. Once passage reaches 1,000 fish per day, the action should drastically improve, especially with the absence of lower river sport effort.

District lakes are receiving a good plant of trout. Check the WDF&W web site for best opportunities.

SW Washington fishing report 4/12/13

SW Washington- Spring chinook are starting to show on the Cowlitz River. Although the run isn't predicted to be an exceptional one, fishable numbers will grow in the coming weeks.

The Kalama and Lewis are fair at best and spring chinook numbers are expected to be low.

With just over 900 chinook over Bonneville Dam, excitement is building for the Drano Lake fishery. Catches have been tallied and should increase daily although the peak is still 2 weeks away.

SW Washington fishing report

SW Washington- With most anglers focused on salmon in the mainstem Columbia, district rivers are getting little attention for viable steelhead returns. The Cowlitz is a top prospect with late winters and early summers starting to show. A spring chinook has also been confirmed.

Other area rivers will see restrictions this spring as returns are forecast to be low.

Salmon passage at Bonneville is becoming more consistent but interest remains low. That should change as we near mid-month as passage is likely to peak in about a month from now. Low flows are more conducive to early passage.
